This is where we come in. Below is a list of home buyers’ biggest turn-offs and what you should avoid when preparing your home to sell. The numbers below are based on a survey conducted with over 2,000 randomly selected participants. Review the information below to ensure you are set up for success!

Before you begin showcasing your home….

WASH THE WALLS
According to the survey conducted by Go Compare, an astounding 70% of home buyers were deterred by stains on the walls and ceilings. Make sure to get rid of any damp patches and scuff marks that appear throughout your house. This will create a welcoming atmosphere that will attract home buyers, instead of sending them running!

GET RID OF UNWANTED ODORS
In that same survey, 56% of home buyers said they were turned off by stinky odors and peculiar smells coming from the home and property. Take the time to thoroughly clean your home and remove any odors that may have been left behind from smoking or pets.

SET THE MOOD
When you walk through the front door are you met with an open room filled with bright, welcoming light? 54% of homebuyers are put off by dull, dim lighting in your home. Make sure to replace any light bulbs that have blown in order to create a well-lit atmosphere that is welcoming to guests. Add lamps to dark rooms and replace dark drapes with light sheers. This will allow light to cascade in and add to the overall mood you are trying to achieve.

CONSIDER RENOVATING
Do you have a leaky sink the bathroom? Or a buildup of soap scum in the shower? Around 25% of homebuyers within the survey found an outdated bathroom to be unappealing. Make sure to thoroughly clean your bathroom and update any old-fashioned decorations. If you have the funds, you may consider renovating in the areas that need it. Pay close attention to high traffic fixtures such as the faucet, toilet, tub, and sink.

STAGE YOUR HOME
In a survey conducted by Go Compare, 15% of people were disappointed with a cluttered room, and another 14% were not flattered by over-the-top decorations. Home buyers often like to picture themselves living in your home, so it’s important to create an atmosphere in which they can see themselves thriving. Prepare a clean, modern home that showcases enough to make the buyer feel comfortable.
